Prather Addition, Franz Park

Supposedly Dogtown landowner James Prather was out of town for an extended period when the nearby Glades were first subdivided, and his caretaker took advantage of his employer’s absence to cut down the property’s oak trees and sell off the timber. When Prather returned, he quickly subdivided his land into the Prather Addition, which makes up the southern part of the Franz Park neighborhood.

There is a wide variety of housing, much of it seemingly from the early Twentieth Century.

But then there’s some wood frame houses, such as the ones below.

This one in particular is an interesting wood frame duplex complete with some wood pilasters on the corners. It is a rarity.

But there is some interesting in-fill, as well. These look to be from the 1990s.

But the houses in general are working class, built simply and often out of wood and not brick.

And there’s more in-fill made up of Cape Cods, showing that there were large swaths of undeveloped land well into the mid-Twentieth Century.

Kraft Avenue has these little shotgun houses, which go down the east side of the street.

And in no better illustration of how rugged this neighborhood’s topography can be, this house has a garage facing the street well below the grade of its owner high above.
