Clifton, Cincinnati

Up north, the Clifton neighborhood was an independent town dating to the 1850s, but street car lines, which made the arduous climb up the steep hills feasible, transformed the area in the 1890s.

Much of the housing dates to the first years of the Twentieth Century, however, and filled in what had originally been the grounds of large estates.

The house below is an example of one of the earlier ones built in the neighborhood.

Houses are built close together, but they do have driveways that proceed to the back of the property to garages, showing they were built after the advent of the automobile. The commute to downtown would have been short and easy.

There are earlier houses, such as these Queen Annes from the late Nineteenth Century.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen that fake stone used like that!

One of the more prominent houses is the Freund-Heintz House.

Up on Ludlow Avenue, which surely once had a streetcar running down it, there is a thriving business district that benefits from the hospital and university nearby.

I love the storefronts built in front of older houses.

This apartment courtyard got a store dropped right in the middle of it.
